Another quick flolum everyday recipe… basic oatmeal and a fast option for a warm breakfast. You can even get everything ready the night before and program your Smart pot to delay start in the morning.

1 cup quick cook steel cut oats
1 1/3 cup water
pinch of salt

  1. In a container that fits easily into the liner of the Instant Pot, combine all the ingredients.
  2. Using the pot in pot method, pour 1 cup of water in the liner of the Instant Pot. Put the trivet in and place the container with the oats on top of the trivet.
  3. Close and lock the lid, making sure the sealing knob is on sealing. Start the recipe program.
  4. Once the cooking is done, you can release the pressure by the quick pressure release.
  5. Stir and serve with brown sugar, maple syrup, cream and fresh fruit or whatever you would like.

  • Hey,
I haven’t tried cooking the oatmeal in a separate bowl. I just did it in the instant pot liner. Was this a personal preference? Also, I have seen you use those stainless bowls before, where did you get those and how did you know it could be put in a pressure cooker?

    • Hi Calvin, I do it this way because in my mind, cooking in the liner would be way messier (given my experience cooking in a pot on the stovetop) and cleaning a bowl plus the liner is way easier. No mess at all. I got the bowls from Costco years ago. I think the brand name is Calidad Professional. It came in a set of 4, this being the smallest one at 2qt. I assumed it would be fine because it’s stainless steel just like the liner. Hope that’s helpful!

  • Flo, the script worked fine; however, when I looked at the recipe in the app, it incorrectly displayed with the prep time and the cooking time reversed. (The actual cook time coded for the IP is not impacted, it’s correct, it’s only the text descriptions of the cook time and prep time that have been reversed.) This isn’t an entry error on your part, but has to do with the coding in the app itself. I corrected my copy of the script simply by swapping the prep time for the cook time, and now the text of the recipe displays correctly. Until the developer corrects the issue in the app, when you enter the data for number of servings, the prep time and the cook time, just exchange the data for the prep time with the data for the cook time and it will display as it should.

Anyway, I made the oatmeal using PIP and it was perfect. Thank you!

  • I made this tonight and angels sang. I’ve never made steel cut oats so easily before!!! I can actually make it in the morning. Fresh oatmeal. Amazing. Thank you so much. Now I’ll add this to my other recipe of yours: Malaysian curry chicken.

  • Hi Flo,

I am getting my Instant Pot Smart in a couple of days and I have a quick question, with the app on my Android Tablet, when I DL your script all it does is add the cooking time to the cooker, how do I get the whole recipe into the app ie..Ingredients, steps of the recipe stuff like that, Is there a way to do it, if there is please help, also can you point me in the right direction where I can locate Recipe with scripts to use with the Instant Pot, (Facebook, Web, Pinterest, Google +), I looked in You tube, but I can’t seem to figure out how you can leave rateings or comments..

Thanks for whatever help you can give me,

    • Hi Steve, I am so sorry… when I first started writing scripts, I don’t remember it allowing us to actually add recipes. So, the recipes are only on my blog. I am trying to make sure my more recent scripts include the recipe but it’s not a very easy app to work with so it takes a lot of time for me to get the recipes done. I’m sorry I am not more helpful. (In order to comment and like YouTube videos, I think you have to have an account.)

    • Hi Steve, I am pretty sure I responded to your message but now I don’t see it. Apologies if I didn’t! Unfortunately, when I started using the scripts I could not figure out how to enter recipes on the original app, just the scripts. The app has since been updated but it’s still incredibly tedious to enter. Most of my recipes can be found on my blog. In order to comment and rate YouTube videos, I believe you must have an account. Hope you are enjoying your new pot!

  • I make steel cut oats in the IP. I use three cups of almond milk (unsweetened)instead of water and the oatmeal becomes super creamy and delicious. The other day I put the ingredients in the IP container and got distracted for about a 1/2 hour, so the oatmeal soaked a bit in the almond milk. The oatmeal came out even better. BTW, you one of the best YouTube channels. The instant pot demos are the best.

  • Deepest apologies… only seeing this now… I have not tried making regular oatmeal. I imagine it would be similar but less cook time. Try 5 mins.
